Euro 2024 England: Bellingham's heroic performance against Slovakia saves England
After Jude Bellingham's spectacular equalizer in the 95th minute saved
Bellingham England from elimination against Slovakia on Sunday, Harry Kane's
early extra-time winner moved the lackluster pre-tournament favorites into the
semifinals with a 2-1 triumph.
Prior to Ivan Schranz's brilliant finish past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 25th minute,
Slovakia's football had a significantly faster start than England and issued multiple warnings to their opponents.
England, who face Switzerland in their next game, have recovered from
losing their first three European matches, including the quarter-finals of the
previous tournament. They thought they were equal shortly after half-time UEFA
Euro 2024, but Phil Foden's flick was clearly offside.
When Slovakia's national football team found itself pinned deep in its own half late on,
Surprisingly, Declan Rice hit the post and Kane fired Foden's free-kick. However, England
seemed to lack faith as its supporters became increasingly angry.
But Bellingham, just one day after turning twenty-one, leveled things up with a spectacular bicycle kick towards the conclusion of regular time, setting up extra time and England's first on-target attempt.
And less than a minute after the restart, Kane's close-range
header past the dejected Martin Dōbravka gave England the lead and completed an
incredible comeback.
As the match progressed, Slovakia national football team
started to lose interest and came near to tying the score in extra time when
Peter Pekarík mishandled a dangerous cross over the bar right before the break.
England secured a lucky win and advanced to the Euro 2024 quarter finals, where
they will play Switzerland on July 6 in Duesseldorf after fending off a final
wave of balls into the box.
They will have to improve significantly, though, as
the Swiss defeated Italy in the round of 16 and were unlucky to lose a late
equalizer to Germany in the group stage.
In order for England to accomplish more than just postpone the inevitable, they will undoubtedly need to play a lot better when they take on Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on Saturday
in Dusseldorf. Nonetheless, they should be commended for their perseverance and
tolerance in the face of challenges that have paralyzed earlier England teams.
They have recovered from the edge, which can occasionally act as a significant
catalyst in athletics.
